GFWC Woman's Club of Indio is hard at work - oftentimes so much so that we find ourselves in the news.   Look at what we've done!

A little bit of hard work and a whole lot of fun!

Yard of the Month Winners Announced!

November, 2021:  Mrs. Rosa Mora

Mrs. Mora converted her lawn to desert scape in 2015 with help of CVWD rebates. This yard has the most impressive variety of ā€œorganicā€ fruits. The front and back yard have various types of lemons, oranges, and grapefruit along with avocado and papaya -- all of these planted from seeds by Mrs. Mora.  The yard also has basil, rosemary, moringa, and other spices that can be used for cooking and teas.

Angela and I give this yard two (green) thumbs up. Congratulations Mrs. Mora.

Recognition Chair Bernadette Subia-Martinez would love to hear from you about homes deserving praise for their terrific curb appeal.
If you would like to nominate a great yard, or even your own, contact Bernadette at [email protected].

WCI Votes to Support A New Organization!

November 2021:  A new project, recently approved by our Board of Directors, is now being supported by GFWC Woman's Club of Indio.  This long-standing Coachella Valley non-profit is dedicated to the health and wellbeing of our community and they need of our help. Read the following information about this worthy organization to find out how you can help by volunteering and by making in-kind and monetary donations.

Coachella Valley Volunteers In Medicine Statement:

As a community safety net, CVVIM treats the whole person by addressing chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis. We also treat acute conditions, such as, colds, flu, preventive medicine, diet, and emotional health. In addition to direct patient care, we provide health education and wellness programs, case management and community referrals for patients. Patients are encouraged to schedule appointments with the Health Center instead of visiting local hospital emergency rooms to receive care for non-life-threatening conditions.

A visit to the CVVIM will avoid costly out-of-pocket expenses for uninsured patients, while providing them with high-quality, compassionate care.

CVVIM is a member of Volunteers in Medicine, a national nonprofit alliance with more than 90 free clinics across the U.S., whose mission is to provide healthcare services in a compassionate, caring way to our neighbors in need.

The first uninsured, low-income patients walked through the doors of CVVIM new Health Center in November 2010. The only no-cost clinic in the Coachella Valley, it took three years of planning to make the dream a reality. A dedicated and diligent group of healthcare and community volunteers along with governmental leaders championed the cause of helping neighbors in need have access to medical care at the local level.

WCI Hosts a Pet Parade!

Indio, CA (April 10, 2021).  WCI members spent a sunny morning with residents at the Indio Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.  We brought some music and held a pet parade that included some "honorary cats and dogs" (teddy bears) to lift up the spirits of the residents and caregivers and have fun at the same time.  Now that all residents and caregivers have been fully vaccinated, residents were able to mingle a bit (while wearing our masks) and they loved it!  We did too.

ESO is put the finishing touches on our Mini-Library which is now installed at the Indio Food Court on Miles Avenue at the corner of Smurr Street in Old Town Indio.  We are in need of books to stock the library, especially books written in Spanish and children's books.  We will have a book collection on Friday, March 5, 2021, at 5:00 pm to 5:30 pm, at Walgreens on Jefferson and Fred Waring, and also at Dunkin' Donuts on Jackson and Ave. 42.  Clean out those shelves and drop them off ... you could lose hundreds of pounds in just a few minutes!

WCI Resolution Supports the USPS

June 2020:  The members of GFWC Woman's Club of Indio overwhelmingly voted in June to adopt a Resolution supporting the United States Postal Service ("USPS").  The United States Post Office was established in 1775 and is Constitutionally required to serve all Americans, regardless of geography.

Under this Resolution, WCI asks legislators to support the CARES Act and the USPS Fairness Act to provide financial relief and security to the Postal Service.  The Resolution has been sent to the California Federation of Women's Clubs for vote and upon approval, to be sent to the General Federation of Women's Clubs to encourage the entire Federation of Women's Clubs across the US to support this initiative.
